Estimated covered lives for this insurer in your area, per active provider in your specialty practising there: everyone available locally, not only the providers we hold rates for. The last column is different: it counts only the peers we hold rates for, which is what the rate column rests on.

What happens next.

If you'd like to request a rate review, it typically looks something like this. Timing varies by insurer.

  1. 1
    Send the request
Email to the insurer's network team requesting a rate review.
  2. 2
    Follow up
If you haven't heard back within a few weeks, a polite follow-up is reasonable.
  3. 3
    Review and counter
The insurer's review team responds: they could offer a rate increase, decline to make a change, or hypothetically lower your rate (though this is rare).
  4. 4
    Negotiation
One or two rounds of back-and-forth.
  5. 5
    Decision
An amendment to the contracted rate, or keep the status quo.

They are usually tied to an old employer or group, or are catch-all rates an insurer publishes but does not expect anyone to bill. As far as we can tell they are not rates you are paid or could negotiate. Listed here for completeness.

Questions about your rates.

Insurers update their files on their own schedule, and many are slow to remove providers who have left. We process new files as insurers publish them, so the change reaches our data once the insurer’s own files reflect it.

An insurer’s files can list you through arrangements you might not think of as your own contract: a group or practice you bill through, a former employer, another insurer’s network that they rent, or a broad listing of providers they don’t contract with directly. We remove networks we know are rented, but we can’t catch every case.

Insurers don’t always update their published files when a rate changes, and when they do, it’s on their own schedule. We pick up new files as insurers publish them, so a raise shows up once it appears in the insurer’s own filing.

Please let us know, and we’ll check it against the insurer’s filing. Insurers sometimes publish several rates for the same code (for a different setting or credential level, an estimate, or a group you’re listed under), and some files contain errors. We pick the one that looks most like your own rate, and we don’t always get it right.

The insurer may not have published it yet, or its files may be missing details we need to match it to you. Some rates are listed only under a practice’s billing ID rather than your own NPI, and when you also have your own practice, we set aside rates that come through a large group or platform. If you think we’ve missed you, please let us know.
